An Outsider's Perspective on the BTSARMY Community

Written by: Michelle

As an ARMY, we all know how organized this fandom can be and how we are closely bonded because of the adversity that we’ve all gone together with BTS. But what happens when a person who is not familar with BTS or ARMY stumbles into our side of cyberspace?

It all started when Jewish political reporter, David Pery (@Lollardfish) received spam messages on his Facebook, one being a TATA emoji which he described as a “weird anthropomorphic heart with a face, arms, and legs”.

That was all it took for ARMYs to interact with him and welcome him into our side of Twitter. Perry stated that ARMYs are quite different from other online fandoms as we don’t “demand admiration of whatever it is we are stanning” and instead “inquired after [people’s] musical tastes and tried to match that to BTS”. Perry described BTS’s music as “slick, professional, perfectly-executed pop” and tells readers that “BTS is super-famous for a reason”. Perry also came to know about our diversity in age and careers, but also how BTS has helped a lot of us with our mental health challenges.

The Internet is a brash and ugly place, but somehow BTS stan twitter is a place where people flood each other with love, encourage others to feel accepted and to love yourself. All it took was a random BT21 emoji for a stranger to discover its existence.
